On the Trending Tab, you can filter the topics by different criteria to determine whether they should be considered trending. If something falls outside these restrictions, its content won't be included on the Trending Stories, even if it is trending by other criteria.
You can access the Trending Filters by tapping the gear on the Trending Tab, and you will see a screen like the one below. If you want to know more about each criterion, see this post.
